Finland: Helsinki

The capital of Finland, with some one million inhabitants.  Long a provincial backwater, after Finland's EU accession the city has finally flowered into a hip metropolis -- which remains, alas, horribly dark and cold for most of the year.

Töölö/Hietalahti

Helsinki's brash new residential quarter -- in 1930.  Features some lovely architecture and Helsinki's best beach to boot.

A boring EU summit and a good excuse for a demonstration against everything bad and in favor of everything good.

An abundant element for much of the year, but it only looks interesting in spring as the ocean starts to thaw.
